The Public Media Collaborative brings passionate connectors from different disciplines together to educate one another, discuss issues and ideas, and plan and take action on social action projects to benefit local communities, nonprofits, and grassroots movements.

We will be facilitating the Social Networking 101 workshop track at the Seizing the Moment conference, cosponsored by the Renaissance Journalism Center and ZeroDivide, in collaboration with New America Media.

9am-10:30am: Using Social Media for Social Action: Case Study of Knight News Challenge Program
Last year, the Knight News Challenge increased visitors to the program Web site by 100 percent; quadrupled the number of blog posts about the program; and created buzz about the submission and mentoring process—all by using social media and a tiny part-time team. This case study shows you how Knight’s team made it happen and gives you ways to plan and measure your own social media campaign.

10:45am-12:15pm Building Your Brand with Social Media
There are more than 250 million people on Facebook, more than 19 million on Twitter, and yet, using them both for professional and business purposes remains a mystery for many. This hands-on, tactics-focused workshop explains these new tools and offers practical strategies and examples of how to use them and track results.

Like other news publications, ethnic news publications are seeing a steady erosion of readers to online platforms. This session will show you how to use the new tools of engagement — social bookmarking, mobile, Twitter, widgets, Facebook and more — to reach new audiences, create communities of interest, and become relevant to a new generation of users.
